Stretching Your Hamstrings

Stretching and flexibility is a life long activity for many people.  Stretching keeps you young and allows you to move freely without the possibility of injuries.  The problem is that the area that is tight, might not be the area that needs stretched.

Take your hamstrings for example.  They in fact might be as flexible as they need to be but you still can’t touch your toes.  And by stretching them more you could be over stretching them and making the problem worse.  I know it sounds counter intuitive but let me try to explain.

Without going into great detail, if your pelvis is tilted forward, you can have over stretched hamstrings and under stretched hip flexors.  And yet your hamstrings still feel tight.  If you over stretch them the hip flexors will be able to get tighter and you wont solve your problem, in fact you can make it worse.

The solution, stretch your hip flexors, which allows your pelvis to be in the correct position, which allows your hamstrings to not be pulled tight all the time.  As your hip flexors become looser your pelvis will begin to re-position as this happens the hamstring will not have to be pulled as far to reach down to touch your toes, or pull on your socks.

This isn’t the best of explanation of how to stretch your hamstrings, but what I am trying to make clear is that sometimes, more often than not, the opposite set of muscles are the ones that need stretching.  If you are not getting results by stretching the area that seems tight you should try to stretch the opposite muscle.  In fact you would be better served to stretch both sides any way.

This is what I did and my flexibility dramatically improved.  I was just stretching the hamstrings and getting no improvement at all.  Then I started stretching the front of my legs and the hip flexors.  With in two weeks I was getting better results than 3 months of just my hamstrings.

I now make sure I stretch and warm up both sides of the muscles, even if I don’t need it.  It’s made a huge difference in my over all flexibility.

The program I started with was a DVD of Relax into Stretch.  This program showed me very useful stretches and a new way of doing them.  I really got allot of stretch following this program.  It's not the only program out there but it's worth taking a look at.  Here is a link to his very informative web site about stretching and how to stretch.

How to Get Flexible Fast Article Here

Flexibility takes effort and knowledge.  The effort is the easy part. The knowledge however is the hard part.  I have read so many books on stretching, yoga and flexibility.  I have done every program you can imagine on, how to stretch and some that you really shouldn’t know about.  And the one thing most of them had in common was, they didn’t work worth beans.

That’s right they didn’t work.  I spend a lot of money trying to get more flexible and learn to stretch.  The ones I think that made me the maddest were the yoga videos.  Now, not all yoga is bad but the tapes I watched were a complete joke.  They started out by showing me impossible stretching positions, that only a born contortionist could even begin to stretch into.
